Afghanistan cricket set for multi-million dollar windfall

t comes on top of the US$422,000 awarded to the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) by the ICC Board in April of this year
Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Chief Executive Officer Dr Noor Mohammad has said the national team’s qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 is the start of the “second phase” of its cricketing development.

Afghanistan’s journey to get to the point where it will be competing in Australia and New Zealand in 18 months’ time has already been a rapid one because as recently as 2008 it was playing against Jersey and Japan in ICC World Cricket League Division Five.

Since then it has played in two ICC World Twenty20s, in 2010 and 2012, and Dr Noor said sealing a place at the game’s global 50-over competition for the first time would act as a catalyst for further expansion of the sport within the country.

“Cricket is already the most popular sport in Afghanistan and our idea is to further improve and develop its popularity and get more participation throughout the country,” he said.

“Cricket is not just a game in Afghanistan. It is also a big tool for youth development as our current players can now show youngsters what can be achieved through playing the game.

“That, in turn, can help promote peace and stability and that is why the (Afghanistan) government and other departments are supporting us.

“We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the (Afghanistan) Ministry of Education that cricket will be part of the school curriculum and that is a way of promoting grass roots talent in the country.

“This is the start of what you might call our second phase. We are looking at bringing in new support and technologies as we will now be performing against Full Members on a more regular basis,” he added.

There is no doubt the future for the game in Afghanistan appears very bright. That much is clear with the country’s under-19 side preparing to take part in its third successive ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the United Arab Emirates early next year.

Two of the current squad that were instrumental in the ICC Cricket World Cup-clinching win over Kenya in Sharjah on Friday – left-arm spinner Hamza Hotak and left-hand batsman Hashmattulah Shaidi – have previously played in ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cups.

Others within the senior set-up have been making waves well beyond Afghanistan, with captain Mohammad Nabi and fast bowlers Hamid Hassan and Shapoor Zadran taking part in the Bangladesh Premier League earlier this year.

And there are plenty of reasons to believe this pace of development will only continue to accelerate, thanks to support from numerous key stakeholders, both within Afghanistan’s borders and overseas.

Funding from the ICC, including targeted support approved by the ICC Board in April of this year, will amount to more than US$ two million over the next 18 months while Pakistan, the country’s closest Full Member, has already committed to provide practical assistance.

The Pakistan Cricket Board signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding with the ACB in March this year, promising technical and professional expertise, including assistance with High Performance Programme camps.

And Pakistan, which was the first Full Member to play Afghanistan in a One-Day International, in February 2012, will play Nabi’s side in a Twenty20 International in Sharjah this December.

Backing like that, as well as from the Asian Cricket Council, together with the recent televising and live streaming of Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship matches into Afghanistan, has meant that although the country is not currently able to host matches because of security concerns, the game is still growing rapidly.

During 2012 formal participation figures shot up to over 23,000, compared to 5,000 in 2009, however, it is likely this figure is much higher today.  Thanks largely to support from the US government’s aid arm – USAID – the country now has many more cricket venues, including dedicated stadiums in Kabul and Jalalabad.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), custodians of the Laws of Cricket, has also been enormously supportive since 2006, when a side led by former England captain – and now MCC President – Mike Gatting first played Afghanistan.

Since then both Nabi and Hassan have spent time as MCC Young Cricketers and the club has continued to back the game’s development in Afghanistan through MCC Spirit of Cricket coaching camps.

Afghanistan has been drawn in Pool A of the 14-team event, where it will face Australia, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and a qualifier that will come from the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand in January 2014.

ICC launch 500-day countdown to Cricket World Cup 2015

With exactly 500 days to go before the first ball is bowled in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 on February 14, batting wizard Sachin Tendulkar has predicted that the trophy will remain in the subcontinent with India favourite to retain the title.

Tendulkar, who along with Pakistan’s Javed Miandad is the only player in the history of the game to play in six World Cups, hoped that if Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side successfully defended the title, then it will once again provide tremendous joy to the nation while making it only the third country after West Indies and Australia to win back-to-back titles.

“Along with India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are also good sides,” said the champion batsman, adding: “I am partial towards India and want them to do well. That would be really exciting. It will give so much happiness to the entire nation.

“That is something I would want, along with a billion plus people who will also be expecting the same thing to happen.”

The Indian icon retired from ODI cricket in December 2012 as the leading run-getter with 18,426 runs. Tendulkar had a lion’s share in India’s historic victory in Mumbai on 2 April 2011 when he finished as his side’s top scorer with 482 runs from nine matches.

India, which leads the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings table by a distance, has been drawn in Pool B and will open its campaign against Pakistan in Adelaide on February 15.

India’s other matches in the first round are against South Africa (in Melbourne on February 22), Qualifier 4 (in Perth on February 28), West Indies (in Perth on March 6) and Ireland (in Hamilton on March 10) and Zimbabwe (in Auckland on March 14).

Four-time world champion Australia will launch its campaign against traditional rival England under the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) lights in Melbourne on  the opening day, March 14, while co-host New Zealand will feature in the tournament opener against Sri Lanka in Christchurch.

Pool A includes Afghanistan or UAE, Australia, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Qualifier 3 while Pool B comprises India, Ireland, Pakistan, South Africa, Qualifier 4, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

The top four sides from each pool will progress to the quarter-finals, followed by the two semifinals and the final. All the seven knock-out matches will have reserve days.

Tendulkar, who is also the highest run-getter in the history of ICC Cricket World Cup with 2,278 runs from 45 matches (1,195 runs more than Miandad), hoped India players will quickly adjust to the conditions in Australia and New Zealand.

“Well I think most of our guys have been to Australia. They know what to expect, (as) they have played there already,’’ said Tendulkar who was part of the squad that toured Australia in 2011-12.

In the lead up to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in 2014-15, India will again be in Australia for a four-Test series. This will be followed by a tri-series also featuring England, apart from the host.

More than Australia, Tendulkar’s worry was about adjusting to New Zealand conditions.

Recalling India’s ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 match against New Zealand, Tendulkar said: “I remember our match in Dunedin, where it was extremely cold and windy. Whenever a batsman hit the ball with the wind, it would travel 10 yards further, but when we had to play against the wind, the ball travelled 10 yards less!

“As there is a tour to New Zealand planned in early 2014, it should give them good exposure to the conditions there.”

In the last few years, England has emerged as a top ODI side and came very close to winning its first 50-over tournament before losing to India in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013.

It currently sits third on the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings table, four ratings points behind Australia.

England has played in three World Cup finals (1979, 1987 and 1992) but is yet to put its hand on the trophy.

England’s Test and ODI captain Alastair Cook said his side was improving and will try to make it fourth time lucky.

“We have been improving steadily as a one-day side in recent years and are very much looking forward to the challenge of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

“We got close to winning our first 50-over ICC event finishing as runners up in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 and will be working hard in the coming months to ensure we give ourselves the best possible opportunity to go one step further in 2015,” said Cook.

Cook said his boys have always enjoyed playing cricket in Australia and New Zealand and look forward to similar entertainment in 500 days’ time.

“Playing cricket in Australia and New Zealand is always a fantastic experience and I have no doubt it will be another great occasion both for the teams and their supporters,” he said.

Meanwhile, co-hosts Australia and New Zealand celebrated the 500 days to go occasion in style.

New Zealand’s stars Martin Guptill, Kyle Mills and Mitchell McClenaghan joined local kids for a game of beach cricket at Auckland’s idyllic Takapuna Beach.

In Sydney, Australia fast bowling legend Brett Lee helped to mark the occasion on the historic Sydney tall ship, Southern Swan, the day before the International Fleet Review begins.

Lee, a key figure in Australia’s World Cup triumph in 2003, said he was looking forward to the inspiration provided by one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity for fans and families to experience the magic of the ICC Cricket World Cup. I’m really looking forward to both Sydney and Australia making the 2015 summer one that inspires young cricketers and provides lasting memories,” he said.

The 2015 event will see 49 matches played across 44 days at 14 venues across the two hosting nations. All 14 teams will need to play in both Australia and New Zealand if they are to claim cricket’s ultimate prize.

Focus is on 2015 World Cup: Bailey

George Bailey, who will lead Australia during their limited-overs tour of India that includes one Twenty20 International and seven One-Day Internationals, described the series as a stepping stone towards the 2015 World Cup that will take place in Australia and New Zealand.
Australia are slated to host England for the Ashes after this series, but Bailey, said that wasn’t the topmost agenda for the team in India.

“There’s plenty of guys back in Australia who are already starting their focus on the Ashes. As far as this tournament goes, the focus is on the preparation for the 2015 World Cup,” said Bailey. “To be honest, in terms of international cricket, it (the Ashes) is months away. Eight games here is a long way to go. We have got a round of first-class matches to go. So there’s a lot to go through before we start our focus on the Ashes.”
Australia are currently ranked second in ODIs and if they win the series by a 6-1 or 7-0 margin, they’ll dethrone India from the top spot. Steve Rixon, the Australia coach, said reaching the top was very important to everyone connected with Australian cricket.
“We look at the tournament not just as a tournament, but a chance to be No.1 in the world in one of the three formats. It’s very important for the players, very important for the coaching staff, and very important for Cricket Australia,” emphasised Rixon.
Bailey is leading the ODI team because Michael Clarke, the regular captain, is suffering from a relapse of a longstanding back injury. Both Bailey and Rixon didn’t minimise the importance of missing Clarke, with Bailey likening it to “taking out (MS) Dhoni” from the Indian side.
Australia have triumphed on the last two occasions when they played India in a seven-match ODI series in India, winning in 2007 and 2009, but though they’ve arrived with a considerably less experienced squad this time, Bailey and Rixon felt that the greater exposure players had to Indian conditions would hold them in good stead.
Several members of the squad are, or have been, part of IPL franchises and five players were part of the sides that played in the Champions League Twenty20 final on Sunday – Shane Watson, James Faulkner, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Glenn Maxwell.
“One of the great things about the IPL over the years is that we have played in a lot of grounds against the best players. All of us have played with and against a lot of the Indian players and vice-versa,” said Bailey. “We know a lot of strengths and weaknesses, a lot about personalities. There are some advantages for both the teams, but also some areas to try and exploit.”
“We have been fortunate to have five of them playing (in CLT20 2013),” added Rixon. “We are in a reasonable position.”
Rixon also said that while a young side and a relatively inexperienced captain could be seen as a weakness, it could also be turned into a strength. “It is one of our learning curves at the moment. George is relatively new to captaincy. In the time he has been captain, he was very competitive with the job. He’s done it with distinction in Twenty20s. Youthful exuberance can often be very good.”
In the past, Australian sides would fire salvos at the opposition before the series, with the likes of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne often predicting a winning series margin in favour of Australia. But Bailey said the current group “doesn’t need to do that”.
“We are very polite,” said Bailey. “I still think around the world you still see certain indiviudals make those predictions. That was the way they challenged themselves, got themselves fired up for the series. This group doesn’t need to do that. We have got enough challenges and don’t have superstars like Shane Warne or Glenn McGrath. If we are going to play good one-day cricket, if we win this series, we will need all 13 or 14 of us to play really well.”

Afghanistan qualify for Cricket World Cup 2015

Afghanistan have been placed in Group A for the tournament, where they will meet England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and both host nations.

Afghanistan have taken a further step in a remarkable rise by qualifying for their first World Cup courtesy of a crushing win over Kenya.
Afghanistan only became an International Cricket Council affiliate member in 2001 and were granted associate status this year on the back on successive appearances at the World Twenty20.
But a place at the 50-over showpiece event, to be staged by Australia and New Zealand in 2015, is a new high for the nation and the team secured it in emphatic fashion with a seven-wicket success in Sharjah.
There were still 29.1 overs remaining when Mohammad Nabi hit the winning runs to reel in a meagre target of 94.
Victory was built around a superb bowling performance, with Kenya rolled over for 93.
